In the spirit of being a bit more inclusive (and very old school at the same time), I thought we might try a group blogging exercise. Long, random, rambles welcome. I have tried to set it up so that you have access to author posts (you know who you are).
Anyway books. I think we're looking for good, honest, novels. Don't know anything about it, but this one was on the Orange list last year and has a good name:
The White Woman on the Green Bicycle, Monique Roffey
or something classic?
The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger
I don't know, over to you...
if I remember correctly, at the boozy embryogenesis of this little idea, I threatened Martin with Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
ReplyDeleteI once vowed to read all of Dickens' work before I die, so a couple of them thrown in would be great! :)
ReplyDeleteBut I will give anything a try x
PS. That was Molly by the way...I haven't got the hang of this yet
ReplyDeleteYes I definitely would like to read The Unbearable Lightness of Being at some time, but the one you've suggested sounds great as a starting point, Patty. There's also a bunch of books that I mean to read, but never end up doing, that the light pressure of a book group deadline might encourage me to finish (like Proust). Also there are a few books already on our shelf I haven't read that might be interesting: Submarine by Joe Dunthorne (they just made what is apparently a pretty good film adaptation of it) and After the Fire by Evie Wyld.
ReplyDeleteAnything with a film adaptation, so I can cheat if necessary. I'm not saying i'm definitely going to cheat but i like to have the option there to fall back on. Not massively keen on Dickens but if you all have a massive desire to read some of his stuff I could give him another go.
ReplyDeleteThat's alright Rob. We have most of Dicken's on DVD at ours, so that option is still open to you. I just read a review about a dystopian book I hadn't heard of, written in the 70's, but set in 1994, which apparently reflects some of our current 'hacking' trends. It's called 'A State of Denmark'.
